Day 1
Kampala to Queen Elizabeth National Park
The trip starts with an early rise and a departure from Kampala at about 7:00am, with an English-speaking driver-guide in a 4WD safari vehicle. The road runs through open countryside and brings you into Queen Elizabeth in time for lunch, after which you check in; guests staying at Mweya Safari Lodge can use the pool through the heat of the afternoon. The first game drive follows, with the guide pointing out trees, birds, animals, plants and reptiles along the way, warthogs, elephants and lions among them, so keep a camera to hand. Dinner and the night are at the lodge you have chosen, with evening views over the crater lake, the savannah and the Kazinga Channel. Lodging runs from Mweya Hostel and Queen Elizabeth Safari Camp at the budget level, through Ihamba Safari Lodge and Simba Safari Camp, up to Kyambura Game Lodge and Mweya Safari Lodge.

Day 2
Morning Game Drive and Kazinga Channel Boat Trip
The lodge staff wake you before breakfast for an early game drive to catch the animals that are up first. On this drive you should come across large herds of elephants, lions out in the far savannah grass and buffaloes grazing, with birds and butterflies alongside; the drive usually runs somewhere between one and three hours. You return to the lodge to rest until lunch, then set off for the boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, where hippos, buffaloes, crocodiles and a great many bird species gather; it is an unhurried ride and the part of a Queen Elizabeth trip most people remember. Dinner is at the lodge, with the same accommodation options as the first night.

Day 3
Return to Kampala
You take breakfast at your own pace and then begin the drive back to Kampala. Lunch is in Mbarara town, with a stop at the Equator crossing for photographs and souvenirs at the craft shop. Arrival in Kampala is in the evening. If you are able to add a day to the trip, the operator suggests chimpanzee tracking in Kyambura Gorge inside Queen Elizabeth National Park and a look for the tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha area.
