Four days built around tracking gorillas twice in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, which lies nine to ten hours by road south-west of Kampala and holds the largest mountain gorilla population in the world at 400 animals. The second permit is the point of the trip: you can choose any one of the four tracking centres, Rushaga, Ruhija, Buhoma (the park headquarters) or Nkuringo, and stay there for two nights. Bwindi also holds ten primate species and over 350 species including 23 Albertine Rift endemics. A BaTwa and Bakiga cultural dance is staged at the lodge during the two park nights, and the third night is spent at Lake Bunyonyi with a boat cruise on the water.

Day 1
Kampala To Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
Your guide collects you from Kampala early in the morning for the drive to Bwindi, which takes roughly nine to ten hours. There is a photo stop at the equator monument, the line dividing the northern and southern hemispheres, then lunch at the Igongo cultural museum in Mbarara and a tour of its displays on Ankole culture. From Mbarara the road runs on into south-western Uganda with long views over the Kigezi highlands. You reach the lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Day 2
First Gorilla Trek And A BaTwa Cultural Dance
Breakfast is served early at about 06:45am, and packed lunch and drinking water go with you to the gorilla centre for a briefing on the family you have been assigned. The search inside the forest can be long, often three to eight hours, but ends with an hour spent watching the gorillas feed, groom and play, and birds and other primates are usually seen on the walk back. On returning you are given a gorilla tracking certificate and take lunch at the lodge. In the evening BaTwa pygmies come to the lodge to perform dances and tell stories, followed by dinner and overnight.

Day 3
Second Gorilla Trek And Transfer To Lake Bunyonyi
After breakfast you return to the gorilla centre for the briefing and set out on the second trek, which tends to yield more photographs than the first. You come back out of the forest for lunch at the lodge, then transfer to Lake Bunyonyi and check into a room overlooking the water. An evening sunset boat cruise takes you out among the islands, Punishment Island among them, before dinner and overnight.

Day 4
Return Transfer To Kampala
Breakfast is served on the veranda of your room, and there is the option of traditional canoeing on the lake before you leave. You then travel back towards Kampala, stopping after Kabale town at the Great Lakes Museum for coffee or a snack. The trip ends on arrival in Kampala or at Entebbe airport.
