Day 1
Kampala to Murchison Falls National Park
An early breakfast is followed by the drive north through the Luwero triangle. The first stop is Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, where you are briefed on the rhino restoration project; rhinos died out in Uganda in the early 1980s under civil unrest and heavy poaching, and the government set the site up to breed black and white rhinos and rebuild their numbers in Uganda's protected areas. Lunch is taken in Masindi, after which the road runs into the park along the western arm of the Rift Valley and reaches the falls, where the Nile forces its way through a narrow gorge and drops into calmer water below, throwing up spray that colours into rainbows. You then continue to the lodge for the night. Driving time is about six hours, the meal plan is full board, and lodging is at Paraa Safari Lodge (luxury), Bwana Tembo Lodge (mid-range) or Red Chilli Tented Camp (basic).

Day 2
Game Drive and Launch Cruise at Murchison Falls
After breakfast you drive into the northern section of the park for a game drive, looking for elephants, hartebeests, buffaloes, giraffes, bushbucks, leopards and lions, with plenty of birds along the way. Lunch is followed by a two-hour launch cruise towards the bottom of Murchison Falls, where crocodiles and hippos line the riverbanks and the water birds make it a good stretch for birding and game viewing. From there you go on to the top of the falls before returning to the lodge for dinner and the night. The meal plan stays full board and the accommodation options are unchanged: Paraa Safari Lodge, Bwana Tembo Lodge or Red Chilli Tented Camp.

Day 3
Budongo Forest and the Return to Kampala
Following breakfast you cross the river and pass through Budongo Forest, then stop for lunch in Masindi before driving back to Kampala at an unhurried pace. Anyone who wants to track chimpanzees can do so at Kaniyo Pabidi in Budongo Forest early in the morning before the return leg. Driving time is roughly six hours, and the meal plan covers breakfast and lunch.
