1. Day 1

   Kampala to Jinja via Mabira Forest and the Source of the Nile

   Pick-up is at 6:00am after breakfast at your hotel, followed by the early drive out along the Kampala-Jinja road. The first stop is Mabira Forest in Buikwe District, the main surviving indigenous forest in central Uganda at over 300 sq km, where a two-hour guided walk covers trails through canopy, papyrus valleys and patches of grassland; the forest holds more than 300 bird species, among them the African grey parrot, hornbills, the rare blue swallow, sunbirds and Weyn's weaver around the forest-fringed pond, along with white colobus, red-tailed monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey and blue duiker. The group then carries on to Jinja for lunch at a hotel overlooking the River Nile. The afternoon is given over to Ripon Falls and a boat ride out to the source of the Nile on Lake Victoria, then a look around Jinja town, once Uganda's industrial capital and still lined with old Indian-style buildings from the pre-Amin years, with a stop for crafts if you want one, before the return drive to Kampala. Because the tour is private, the day can instead be built around the Nile adventure activities you choose, such as rafting, kayaking or bungee jumping, and rafting can be taken as a half-day or full-day option.
