Bungee Jumping in Uganda: the 44 Metre Nile Jump at Jinja
A 44 m jump from a tower over the Nile at Jinja, with a water-touch option at high water.
Bungee jumping in Uganda is one jump, from a tower about 44 metres above the White Nile, at a river camp downstream of Jinja near Kalagala. Free fall lasts three or four seconds, and a water touch option dips you into the river at the bottom. Tandem and full moon jumps run too. It operates daily, and the published weight and age limits conflict.

Bungee Jumping Tours in Uganda: the Nile Jump at Jinja
Bungee jumping in Uganda is one jump, at one tower, over the White Nile near Jinja. The platform stands about 44 metres above the water, the free fall lasts three or four seconds, and you can pay to have your head dipped in the river at the bottom. It runs daily and has done for many years.
There is no second site in the country. That makes this page short on comparison and long on detail, which is the right trade: what you need before booking is the height, the limits, the location and whether the thing is running, not a list of alternatives that do not exist.
Where the Jump Tower Stands: a Nile Adventure Below Jinja
Everything calls this the Jinja bungee and that is shorthand rather than an address. The tower sits on the Nile downstream of the town, at a river camp near Kalagala in the Kangulumira area, roughly half an hour further out than most people assume.
This matters for two reasons. The first is that the site has moved before: the original platform stood at Bujagali, and the dam that flooded those rapids pushed the river operations downstream. The second is that a driver who is told Jinja and nothing else may take you to the wrong place.
Ask for the meeting point in writing when you book. Every operator running a Jinja day knows where it is, and the confusion only bites people arranging it independently on the morning.
The town, the source of the Nile and the rest of what happens on that stretch of river sit on our Jinja and the Source of the Nile page.
What 44 Metres Feels Like on a Nile Bungee Experience
The sequence is the same for everybody. You weigh in, the number goes on the back of your hand, and the crew picks the cord to match it. Then the ankle wrap, which is tighter than you expect and is meant to be. Then the shuffle to the edge, because with your feet bound you cannot walk.
The crew counts you down. Almost nobody jumps on three. Most people go on the second or third attempt, and the jump masters here are practised at talking people off the platform without making it worse.
Falling is quiet. That is the part nobody warns you about. The river noise drops away and there is no sensation of speed until the water gets close, and then the cord catches and you go back up. The bounces get smaller. Somebody in a boat hooks you down and you sit there with your heart going while they unwrap your ankles.
Most people come off the water grinning and slightly stupid. A few are quiet for ten minutes. Both are normal.
Tandem Jumps, Water Touches and Full Moon Trips
Three variations are sold alongside the standard jump and all of them are worth knowing about.
The water touch is the popular one. The crew lengthens the cord so that your hands, or your head and shoulders, go into the Nile at the bottom of the fall. It costs nothing extra in nerve and it changes the photographs completely.
Tandem jumps put two people on one cord, which suits couples, nervous first timers and anyone who needs somebody else to make the decision. The combined weight limit is the constraint.
Full moon jumps run on the nights the moon allows it. Jumping in the dark over a river you cannot see is a different proposition and the crew books it separately, so ask well ahead rather than on the day.
Weight, Age and Health Limits on a Bungee Tour
The published limits conflict, which is why they sit in a block near the top of this page rather than buried in a sentence. Minimum weights quoted range from 32 to 40 kilograms and maximums from 112 to 120. Minimum age is stated as thirteen in some places and as no fixed minimum with guardian consent in others.
Do not plan around a number from a third party listing. Write to the operator with the weights and ages in your group and get the answer from them. Being turned away at the tower after a two hour drive is the single most avoidable disappointment on this page.
Health exclusions are the standard ones for this activity: heart conditions, high blood pressure, epilepsy, recent surgery, neck or back injury, pregnancy, and certain eye conditions. The crew will ask and you should answer honestly rather than optimistically.
Safety and Equipment on a Uganda Bungee Adventure
The operation states that it uses equipment built to recognised international standards, with documented maintenance and trained jump masters, and it has run this site for well over a decade with no publicly recorded serious incident. Cords are logged by jump count and retired on a schedule.
Being straight about the wider picture: Uganda has no national regulator for adventure activities. There is no licensing body inspecting bungee towers, which means the operator's own standards are the standards. That is true of rafting, ziplining and abseiling here as well, and it is a reason to use the established operation rather than a cheaper improvisation.
What you can do on the day is look. Watch a jump or two before yours. Look at the cord, the attachment, the recovery boat. Listen to the briefing rather than filming it. If something looks wrong, say so, and if the answer is unsatisfying, walk away and lose the money.
How the Nile Jump Compares With Other African Bungee Trips
It is not the highest in Africa and nobody should pretend otherwise. The bridge jump at Victoria Falls, between Zambia and Zimbabwe, is more than twice the height, and Bloukrans in South Africa is higher again.
What the Nile jump has is setting and access. You fall towards one of the great rivers of the world, with rapids audible downstream and forest on both banks, and the water touch option is the thing people remember rather than the height. It is also cheap by comparison and easy to attach to a day you were already spending on the river.
If bungee is the reason you are choosing a country, Uganda is not that country. If you are here anyway, this is a good jump.
Building a Jinja Adventure Day Around the Jump
The jump takes ten minutes and the drive takes two hours, so nobody sensible builds a day around it alone. Jinja exists as an activity town and the camps sell combinations.
The obvious partner is white water rafting, which fills a full day on grade four and five water and leaves you with an afternoon appetite. Kayaking, river tubing and quad biking all run from the same stretch. Shorter items include a sunset boat on the river, the source of the Nile itself, and a zip line in the forest on the way back.
Mabira Forest sits directly on the road between Kampala and Jinja and absorbs a spare morning neatly, as does Lake Victoria at the Entebbe end. A Jinja day trip is built exactly this way, with the jump as one item among several.
Getting to the Jump Site on a Kampala Day Tour
Kampala to the river is roughly two to three hours by road depending on how the Jinja highway is behaving, and it behaves badly in the morning rush and around Mukono. From Entebbe add an hour.
Most people come on an organised day trip with transport included, which is the least stressful option and often no more expensive than the alternatives once fuel is counted. Public transport gets you to Jinja town but not to the tower, and the last stretch needs a private vehicle or a boda.
Road conditions and timings across the country are in our guide to getting around Uganda.
Best Time of Year for a Bungee Trip in Uganda
Any month works. The tower operates year round and the river level, which matters enormously for rafting, makes almost no difference to a jump from a fixed platform.
Rain is the only variable and it rarely stops the activity outright. Thunderstorms and strong wind do, and both are more likely in the two wet stretches, roughly March to May and again around October and November. If your schedule is tight, take a morning slot: storms here build in the afternoon.
Our month by month timing guide covers the national pattern, which matters more for the rest of a trip than it does for this part of it.
Frequently Asked Questions About Bungee Jumping Tours in Uganda
How high is the bungee jump in Uganda? 44 metres from the platform to the surface of the Nile. Sources agree on this figure, and it is around a third of the height of the Victoria Falls bridge jump.
What does it cost to jump? The operator prices it per jump, with tandem jumps and water touches quoted separately and photograph or video packages sold on top. Published figures vary between listings and some are years out of date, so get the current rate from the operator or from the tour company running your day. No park entry or permit applies, which makes this one of the cheaper activities in a country where permits dominate the budget.
Is the Uganda bungee still running? Yes. The tower operates daily, year round, and advance booking is recommended rather than optional at busy periods.
Is it safe? The operation runs on documented equipment standards and a trained crew, with a long record at the site. There is no national regulator for adventure activities in Uganda, so the operator's own standards are what you are relying on. Watch a jump before yours and ask questions during the briefing.
What are the weight and age limits? Minimum weight is published as somewhere between 32 and 40 kilograms and maximum between 112 and 120, with a combined tandem limit around 235. Age minimums are stated inconsistently. Confirm all of these directly with the operator before you travel, because the numbers in circulation conflict.
Can I jump if I have never done it before? Yes, and most people at the tower have not. No skill is involved and the crew does the technical work. The only requirement is being able to make yourself step off, which is harder than it sounds and easier than it looks.
Will my travel insurance cover it? Often not by default. Bungee jumping sits in the hazardous activities category on most policies and needs an add on. Check before you leave home rather than at the platform.
Jinja day trips are sold and run by independent Ugandan tour companies, and the jump is one part of them. Send your dates, your group and the weights the operator will need to the company behind the trip, and they will confirm the slot and quote the day. We take no booking and charge you nothing.
