This is a lake holiday rather than a game-viewing trip. The Ssese archipelago sits in the north-western corner of Lake Victoria and runs to 84 islands, with tourist facilities concentrated on Banda, Bugala and Bukasa. Wild Whispers Africa notes two ways in: a boat ride of about an hour and a half from Kasenyi on the MV Brovad, or the vehicle ferry MV Kalangala to Bugala via Bukakata, itself a three-hour drive from Kampala, which lets you take your own car across to Kalangala. The operator frames the trip as one for resting, reading and time on the beach, with walks as the main activity and birding for species such as the paradise flycatcher and turacos; swimming is possible but carries a risk of bilharzia, and three days with two nights is the length recommended. Accommodation on the islands ranges from budget bandas through mid-range lodges to luxury properties.

Day 1
To the Ssese Islands on Lake Victoria
You set off for Entebbe at around 11.00am to board the ferry out to the Ssese archipelago, the group of 84 islands lying in Lake Victoria. The ferry leaves the Entebbe pier at 2:00pm, and while you wait there is the option of visiting the Entebbe botanical garden. After lunch you sail out across the lake and land later at Lutoboka bay on Bugala Island. Dinner and the night are at Pearl Gardens Hotel, which sits directly on the beach, on full board.

Day 2
Ecological Nature Walk
After an early breakfast you take an unhurried ecological walk through the forest on the islands, with a guide who explains what you are looking at as you go. You return to the hotel for lunch and the rest of the day is yours. There is an optional boat cruise in the evening, followed by dinner at the hotel.

Day 3
Ferry Back to the Mainland
Straight after breakfast you take the ferry back towards Entebbe. It leaves Bugala at 8.00am and reaches Entebbe by 11.00am.
