What a Scenic Flight in Uganda Actually Buys You

A scenic flight in Uganda is a flight you pay for in order to look out of the window. It is a small market here and worth being clear about its shape: there are dedicated sightseeing flights over Kampala and Lake Victoria from Kajjansi, there are helicopter charters that will take you over Murchison Falls or anywhere else you can pay for, and there is the scheduled bush flight network, which is transport that happens to be one of the best aerial views in the country.

What Uganda does not reliably have is a balloon flight. Balloon trips over Murchison Falls have been sold, and we could not confirm any Ugandan balloon operation currently flying. If that is what you came for, treat it as unavailable until an operator confirms otherwise in writing.

Murchison Falls: the Country's Best Aerial Tour

If you take one flight for the view, take this one. Murchison Falls is where the whole Victoria Nile is forced through a gap of roughly seven metres in the rift escarpment and falls into the gorge below. From the ground you see it from a viewpoint or from the launch. From the air you see the shape of the thing: the river wide and slow above, the squeeze, the plume, and the delta unfolding west into Lake Albert.

Helicopter operators fly this as a day excursion from Entebbe or Kajjansi, and light aircraft charters route over it on the way to the park airstrips. The falls sit inside a national park, so landing fees and park entry apply, which is covered further down.

Helicopter Tours from Kampala and Entebbe

Helicopter work here is dominated by a small number of charter companies flying from Kajjansi airfield, south of Kampala, and from Entebbe. The typical machine is a light single or twin seating four to six, and the typical product is a private charter priced per aircraft rather than per seat, which makes it expensive for two people and reasonable for four.

Short flights over Kampala run to about half an hour, tracking out over Lake Victoria and back across the hills, and the landmarks come quickly: the stadium, the mosque on Old Kampala hill, the cathedral hills, Port Bell. Longer charters go anywhere, including the Rwenzori wall, the Ssese Islands and the crater field around Fort Portal.

Light Aircraft Sightseeing Trips Over Lake Victoria

The cheapest way into the air is the fixed wing scenic flight out of Kajjansi, the grass strip between Kampala and Entebbe that serves as the centre of Ugandan light aviation. Flights of about twenty five minutes take off over the lake, run along the shoreline and turn back across the city, usually in a four seat Cessna, and the strip is also the operating base for a flight training centre that runs charters to the western parks.

It is a modest product rather than a grand one, and that is the point: half an hour, a small aeroplane, and a clear sense of how much of Uganda is water.

The four ways to get into the air in Uganda, and what each one is good for.

Fixed wing scenic flight from Kajjansi. Around twenty five minutes over Kampala and Lake Victoria in a light aircraft. The accessible option and the one to pick if you just want the view.

Helicopter charter. Priced per aircraft, four to six seats, flexible routing, doors that can come off for photography. The strongest option over Murchison Falls and the Rwenzori.

Scheduled bush flight. Cessna Grand Caravan services from Entebbe to the park airstrips. Transport first, but at low level over the rift it doubles as sightseeing.

Private charter to an airstrip. A whole aircraft to your own schedule, routed over what you want to see on the way. Worth it for groups and for awkward timings.

Scheduled Bush Flights as a Scenic Tour

Daily scheduled services run from Entebbe to the bush strips: Kasese and Mweya for Queen Elizabeth, Pakuba, Chobe and Bugungu for Murchison Falls, Kihihi and Kisoro for Bwindi, and Apoka for Kidepo. Flight times run to around an hour and a quarter.

These are not sold as sightseeing and you cannot ask the pilot to circle. What you get instead is an hour at a few thousand feet over the rift valley, the escarpment, the crater lakes and the papyrus deltas, which is a better geography lesson than any road can give. Airstrips, Landing Fees and Park Rules for Flying Tours

Flights that land inside a national park meet the Uganda Wildlife Authority tariff. Landing fees are charged per landing and scale with the size of the aircraft, from gliders and microlights at the bottom through the small passenger classes to helicopters at the top, with a parking fee per day on top. Two details are worth knowing: landing fees exclude the park entry fees your passengers still pay, and a pilot passing through who spends under two hours in the park pays no entry.

Airstrips in the parks are grass or murram, and they close in heavy rain. A wet afternoon at Kihihi is a genuine reason a flight does not happen, which is why fixed things like gorilla permits should never depend on a same day connection.

Weather, Timing and Photography on a Flight Experience

Fly early. Air over Lake Victoria and the rift is calmest in the first hours after sunrise, cumulus builds through the middle of the day, and afternoon storms over the lake are frequent and abrupt. Early light is also what makes the rift escarpment read from above.

The dry months bring haze from grass burning, particularly in the north, so the clearest air is often just after rain rather than in the middle of a dry spell. For cameras, a fast shutter beats everything else, polarisers fight with aircraft windows, and a helicopter with a door removed is the only way to get a genuinely clean frame. Baggage on bush flights is limited and usually soft sided. Typical allowances are around fifteen kilogrammes in a squashable bag. Hard cases are refused.

Charters are priced per aircraft. Two passengers pay what six would, so a helicopter excursion gets dramatically better value with a full cabin.

Weight and balance is real. Operators ask for passenger weights, and they are not being rude.

Check the operator is certificated. Legitimate charter companies hold an air operator certificate from the civil aviation regulator. Ask.

Frequently Asked Questions About Scenic Flight Tours in Uganda

Can I do a hot air balloon flight in Uganda? Assume not. Balloon flights over Murchison Falls appear on plenty of listings, and we could not confirm any Ugandan operation currently flying. Anyone selling you one should be asked to put the flying dates and the aircraft in writing before you pay a deposit.

What does a scenic flight in Uganda cost? Published figures vary widely and are worth treating as indications. Short fixed wing sightseeing flights from Kajjansi are quoted in the low hundreds of US dollars per person, while helicopter excursions from Entebbe to Murchison Falls are quoted per aircraft and start in the low thousands for up to four passengers. The wildlife authority charges are separate and firmer: landing fees per landing by aircraft size, park entry at USD 40 per person per twenty four hours at most parks and USD 45 at Murchison Falls, and aircraft parking per day. Get a written quote naming the aircraft, the routing and who pays the park fees.

How long does a scenic flight last? Twenty five to thirty minutes for the Kampala and Lake Victoria flights. An hour and a quarter each way for the scheduled services to the park strips. Helicopter excursions to Murchison Falls run as a half or full day including time on the ground.

Is flying in small aircraft over Uganda safe? The scheduled bush operators and the established charter companies fly to civil aviation authority standards and have been running these routes for years. Weather is the variable that most often changes a plan, and a cancelled flight on a wet afternoon is the system working.

Will I see wildlife from the air? Sometimes, and it should not be the reason you go. Elephant and buffalo show up well on open ground and hippo are obvious in the Nile delta, but altitude and speed are against you. Fly for the geography, then do a game drive for the animals.

Can children go? Usually yes on fixed wing flights, subject to the operator's minimum age and weight rules, and helicopter charters are normally fine for families. Ask before booking flights, because policies differ between companies.
