Day 1
Pick-Up and Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
After a very early breakfast you set off for Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to track the mountain gorillas. There is plenty to see on the way through the green countryside and the hills around it, and the vehicle can be stopped at any point for photographs. Lunch is taken in Mbarara. You arrive in the late afternoon and check into your lodge, chosen from upmarket properties, tented camps or budget options, with the sounds of birds and primates outside at night. Dinner is at the lodge and the evening is spent getting ready for the following day's trek.

Day 2
Gorilla Tracking in the Rainforest
After an early breakfast you go to the park headquarters for the gorilla trekking briefing, meet your guides and are split into trekking groups according to your permit, then head into the forest, where there are other primates, birds, butterflies and a range of plants along the way. Trekking calls for a reasonable level of fitness because of the hiking and the long walk before you reach the gorillas; it is tiring but memorable, and once you find them you watch from five metres as they feed and the juveniles play. The walking can run anywhere from two to eight hours depending on how far the family has moved. Mountain gorillas are never kept in zoos and only a small number survive in the wild. Afterwards you can either stay around Bwindi to meet the Batwa, who lived entirely off the forest for generations and who show their way of life, their local beer-making and their songs and dances, or drive to Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale and unwind at Arcadia Cottages or Heritage Lodge.

Day 3
Return to Kampala
After breakfast you check out and start the drive back to Kampala, stopping in Mbarara for lunch and at the Equator for photographs and souvenirs from the craft shop. Depending on when you fly out, there may be time for a tour of Kampala city before the transfer to the airport.
